Beyond the Seizure: How Physiotherapy Supports Children with Epilepsy
Every 26th of March, the world turns purple for Purple Day, a global day of awareness for epilepsy. At First Step Therapy Services, we support many children whose daily lives are touched by this condition. While epilepsy is primarily managed by neurologists and medication, the physical impact on a child's development is real and physiotherapy plays an important role in addressing it.
How Epilepsy Affects Physical Development
Seizures affect more than just the brain in the moment. For children who experience frequent or severe seizures, the impact on their body can include:
Muscle weakness and fatigue, particularly after prolonged seizures
Balance and coordination difficulties, often linked to anti-epileptic medications
Delayed motor milestones in children with early-onset epilepsy
Temporary weakness on one side of the body after a seizure (Todd's Paralysis)
Fear of movement — in children and families — leading to reduced activity and deconditioning
These challenges are manageable. With the right physiotherapy support, children with epilepsy can rebuild strength, confidence, and independence.
How Can Physiotherapy Help?
Our physiotherapists design programs that are safe, evidence-based, and built around your child's individual needs. We focus on:
Rebuilding strength and endurance after seizure-related setbacks
Improving balance and reducing fall risk
Supporting a safe return to physical activity, sport, and play
Addressing motor delays in younger children
Improving posture and movement patterns affected by seizure activity
We also work closely with your child's medical team to ensure therapy aligns with their management plan. And importantly, we create a space where children feel safe to move again — because rebuilding trust in their own body is just as vital as any exercise.
Physical Activity and Epilepsy
Activity does not need to stop because of epilepsy. In fact, regular movement supports both overall wellbeing and seizure management. Our team works with families to identify what is safe and appropriate for their child, and helps them get back to doing the things they love — confidently and comfortably.
This Purple Day, let's talk about it.
If your child is living with epilepsy and you have noticed changes in their movement, strength, or activity levels, we would love to help. Contact the team at First Step Therapy Services or book at fsts.com.au 💜
